Silva Kalčić
Silva Kalčić from Zagreb and Split is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – University of Split (since 2018), Art History Department, where she teaches the courses Visual communications, The theory of visual arts, XIX century art – general problems and comparative studies, The theory and history of design, Art criticism and Modern and Contemporary architectures (PhD studies). She was previously employed at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Textile Technology (2009-2018), and before that she had worked at the Croatian Association of Architects as head of publishing and on exhibition programmes – e.g. the Zagreb Salon programme (2003-2007). She also worked as an assistant curator of the Miroslav Kraljević Gallery (2001-2002). She also had a freelance artist status via her membership in the Croatian Freelance Artists Association (2002/2003). She graduated in art history from the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (1998), and she obtained a Ph.D. in architecture and urbanism at the Faculty of Architecture (2015) with the topic „Architecture and New Media – Media Facades, Video and Light- Installations“; she also graduated in fashion design from the Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb (1991).
She deals with contemporary art, architecture and design, that is with visual arts today. She organises exhibitions and writes about visual arts, which she deals with as a selector, evaluator or member of gallery council and for a while she had a freelance artist status.
She has participated in the organisation of several international exhibitions as a member of a team of curators, for example – a retrospective of Croatian video art, Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb (Zagreb Fair, pavilion 19, 2005, also shown at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka 2006). Since 2009, she has been organising exhibitions in the billboard medium in public space (Ploha/Površina//Plane/Surface), and since 2015 art criticism workshops called How to write about contemporary art (Zagreb, Split, Osijek), while in 2006 together with Andreja Kulunčić she organised a workshop on contemporary art practice called Inter(aktiv) for the Zagreb Student Centre (The culture of change programme).
She is the president of the Croatian section of the International Association of Art Critics (HS AICA, since 2019), she was the president (from 2014 to 2018, and is the current vice-president) of the Study section of the Croatian Association of Artists of the Applied Arts (ULUPUH) and of the Expert Council of ULUPUH, and is a member of the Croatian Society of Art Historians, Zagreb Society of Architects (DAZ), Croatian Association of Architects (UHA), InSEA of the Croatian Association of Visual Artists (HULU) Split (currently a member of Council), Ecovast and the Croatian Journalists’ Association (HND). She was a member of the board of directors of the Croatian society for integrations, committee for granting the freelance artists status with the Croatian Freelance Artists Association and the Cultural committee for visual arts with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia in the 2012-2015 term of office. She is currently a member of the Focus group for visual arts in the creation of the development strategy of the city of Split at the University of Split. She is the winner of The City of Zagreb Annual Prize 2009 as the author, selector and curator of the 43rd Zagreb Salon of applied arts and design. She has published several scientific and professional papers, as well as articles in books, participated in projects and congresses related to cultural and urban development (of Split, Šibenik, rural areas etc.); she has published author’s books Svijet prema labirintu/ Eseji o visokoj moderni i postmodernizmu 1970-ih i 1980-ih (ULUPUH, Zagreb, 2017) and the coursebook Neizvjesnost umjetnosti (Školska knjiga, Zagreb, 2005).
